After taking several yoga classes I have learned it is much more beneficial to move fluidly between every pose in the book, as not to stress any muscles. This book is a great starter to stretching daily, but I would still recommend a yoga class or two for the experience.

Yoga for Dummies is a comprehensive resource for introducing you to yoga and its key concepts. It's one of the first yoga books I read when I began practicing yoga and it is as relevant for the beginning yoga student today, as when it was written a decade ago. Feuerstein, who has written over 30 books, is an expert in yoga research and yoga philosophy and Payne is a prominent yoga teacher who specializes in yoga for back pain and a user-friendly style of yoga accessible to everyone.

If you want to learn what yoga is all about Yoga for Dummies is a great introduction and beginning yoga reference.

However, if you are only interested in yoga postures, there may be books better suited to your needs - such as Hatha Yoga Illustrated or Beth Shaw's YogaFit.

Part I Chapters 1 and 2 provides you with the basics - defining yoga and its 8 main branches, the five approaches to yoga and the most popular styles of Hatha yoga, the branch of yoga that focuses on the body rather than the mind or emotions.

It also provides advice for how to begin your own yoga practice. Part II Chapters 3 - 5 provides all you need to get started with yoga in a safe way and explores various relaxation techniques and breathing techniques common to yoga.
